About

MY BACKGROUND

Hello! My name is Wes Hampton, but many refer to me as Mr. Hampton. I grew up in Imlay City, Michigan; a small town 40 minutes east of Flint and 40 minutes west of Port Huron. Go Spartans! Throughout my time in Imlay City Community Schools, I was heavily involved. Some key involvements include wrestling, student council, football, National Honor Society, track & field, and golf.

After graduation, I decided to continue my education at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) because of the opportunities I could receive, and because of the close knit community of the campus population. While attending, SVSU was quickly made into my new home. Getting involved with a plethora of groups on campus helped me find a sense of community I had experienced growing up. These involvements include Orientation Programs, Residential Life, First Year Community Council, Resident's Housing Association, Female Empowerment and Multicultural Education, History Club, Student Life, and NEST Programs. My involvement with different groups allowed me to gain experience working with a diverse set of people. This includes diversity among age, gender, race, cultures, and communication styles. Overall, these experiences have enhanced my skills that will be useful to my everyday life; inside and outside of the classroom. Communication, time management, accountability, empathy and consistency are some of the most relevant.

Aside from my experience outside of the classroom, I have gained just as much from within the classroom; both teaching and learning. The classes I have taken have given me a solid frame of knowledge to be able to teach my future student; from my freshman communications class, to my senior year teaching methods courses. Along with this, I have a wide set of fieldwork experience that has helped put my coursework into practice. These experiences include 6th grade Geography at Cramer Middle School in Essexville, MI, The Success Academy in Saginaw, MI, 7th grade Social Studies at Western Middle School in Auburn, MI, Imlay City High School in Imlay City, MI, and finally 11th and 12th grade Government and Economics at Heritage High School in Saginaw, MI.

I am excited to begin my teaching career, and hope to work in a school where students and staff support each other, creating a feeling of community regardless of the number of students enrolled.
